Magic Stat Ball is a free Windows application designed to help NFL fantasy football and non-fanstasy NFL football fans alike evaluate individual players and teams.

Through the use customizable statistical categories, the user can break down passing, rushing, receiving, and defensive stats from a given regular NFL season in a variety of ways. The statistical viewing options include the following:

  • Home or Road Games Only
  • Versus above or below .500 teams
  • On grass surfaces
  • On artificial turf
  • Division or Non-Division Games
  • Domed Stadiums or Non-Domed Stadiums
  • Weekly statistical break down
  • Weekly range - example, stats from week 4 to week 9

Player or team comparisons can be performed using statistical categories selected by the user. By displaying the percentage by which a team or player has an advantage in each of the chosen categories, the user can begin making a judgement about which player or team has the overall advantage. It should be noted that this comparison method is not designed to replace the judgment of a fantasy football player regarding which player or defense to start. Instead, it attempts to provide a quick way of helping fantasy football players make informed decisions.

Top performers in categories like passing, rushing, and receiving can be displayed. The passing category can include all quarterbacks in MagicStatBalls database organized based on performance in one of the following categories: pass attempts, pass completions, passing yards, completion percentage, touchdowns, interceptions, passer rating, yards per attempt, interception percentage, touchdown percentage, sacks, and total passing fantasy points. The rushing category can include all running backs with the following categories: rushing attempts, rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, rushing touchdown percentage, and total rushing fantasy points. The receiving category can include all wide receivers with the following categories: receptions, receiving yards, receiving touchdowns, receiving touchdown percentage, and total receiving fantasy points.

A fully customizable, weighted power rankings system provides a more objective alternative to rigid formula based ranking systems. The power ranking system uses statistical categories such as defense rushing and passing yards allowed, offense rushing and passing yards gained, give-away-take-aways, team record, and opposing teams combined records. The user can change the weight setting for each of the selected categories, which impacts where the teams that perform well in the categories with higher weight settings are ranked. For example, if the user decides that the most important categories are defensive, the weight setting for each defensive category would be set higher than the other categories. The result would be that the better defensive teams will move up higher in the power rankings list.

The MagicStatBall by default supports the scoring methods of the largest fantasy football leagues online. Of course, the fantasy point settings can be changed to support other leagues. This program is a work in progress. Additional fantasy scoring options will be added as they are requested by users of this program.

MagicStatBall contains NO spyware, NO adware, or any other type of code designed to serve advertisements or track a users browsing habits. This program has been tested on Windows XP, Windows Vista and should work on any 32-bit version of Windows.
